A cooking story:

I am a dilettante cook. I read cookbooks cover to cover, and I gain immense satisfaction and a sense of calm from chopping vegetables for a mirepoix.

For a long while, I lived in Chicago, whose restaurants and corner-groceries provided culinary inspiration. I am originally from Auburn, Alabama, a college town whose eclectic population of Southerners and ex-pats introduced me to many of my favorite recipes. One side of my family is Lebanese-American and the other is Southern. A pinch of za’tar here, a dash of Tabasco there.

For the next several years I am a transient resident of several places, including London and Berlin, and now New York, as I research my doctoral dissertation. This blog is a place to share some things I like to cook. I am drawn to recipes that are economical and have a sense of place and tradition. I seek to find and perfect them, and share some of them here.
